Students from over 30 schools and kindergartens as well as residents and guests of Varna participated in the event organized by the Institute of Oceanology – BAS (IO-BAS) on the occasion of World Water Day – 22 March.

Researchers from the Ocean Technologies Department at IO-BAS presented modern methods applied for monitoring the marine environment in the form of short films. Visitors had the opportunity to see some of them up close – underwater and aerial drone, Argo probe, buoys for measuring wave height, radar level meter, etc.

In addition to getting acquainted with the different marine measurement systems used by scientists in their mission to observe, study and assess the state of the Black Sea, the youngest visitors were also introduced to the characters from the comic strip “Journey with the Ocean Watchers”. The event took place at the Sea Casino in Varna, within the framework of the “Black Sea Blue Academy 2025” project.

The annual World Water Day celebration aims to focus attention on the importance of freshwater, the sustainable management of freshwater resources and the promotion of international scientific cooperation in this field, with a focus in 2025 on the conservation of glaciers which store approximately 70% of the Earth’s freshwater.

World Water Day is also an important date in the calendar of events for marine researchers at the Institute of Oceanology – BAS.
