From today, Sofia Airport is named after the Apostle of Freedom Vasil Levski. President Rumen Radev issued a decree (on the basis of Article 98, item 13 of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria by his Decree No. 22 of 17 February 2025) by which the official name became “Vasil Levski” airport – Sofia.
The project proposed by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for naming Sofia Airport after the brightest historical figure for Bulgaria, Vasil Levski, was supported by the Ministry of Transport and Communications in 2024.
In 2017, the proposal to name the airport after the Apostle of Freedom was made by BAS scientists and received wide support. “With this act, we will all express to the greatest extent our respect to the national hero of Bulgaria who contributed immensely to the revival of the Bulgarian spirit and the liberation of our Fatherland. Apart from being a cosmopolitan personality, the Apostle was also one of the donors at the foundation of the Bulgarian Learned Society in 1869 whose successor is the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences,” the proposal of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences states.
