The “Bulgarian Archaeology 2024” national archaeological exhibition was opened on 14 February at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Over 500 exhibits from 32 sites, varying in type and chronology, from the Prehistory to the Late Middle Ages are presented. The date 14 February was chosen because it marks the professional holiday of the archaeologist.
Among the most impressive exhibits in the exhibition are prehistoric gold ornaments from the Varna necropolis, imported vessels found in the necropolis of Apollonia, exquisite gold ornaments from a burial mound near the village of Captain Petko Voyvoda, bronze figurines and votive tablets from the sanctuary of Mount Alamoura, a richly decorated glass phiale from Deultum, the head of a marble statue from Heraclea Sintica, jewellery from the thermae of Racyaria, a stone “egg” with incised signs from the medieval settlement at Mt. Kavlaklak, the town of Novi Pazar, an encolpion cross with an image of the Virgin Mary from Trapezitsa (Tarnovo). Nineteen historical and archaeological museums from the country are participating in the exposition with finds from their funds.
The President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva congratulated the archaeologists for the holiday and the organization of the large-scale exhibition. Bulgaria is extremely rich in its history and culture and the people who give all their energy and inspiration to make such exhibitions happen, said the President of BAS and added that the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was namely the place that united people of science from all over the country, and the exhibition was an example of this.
Official guests at the opening of “Bulgarian Archaeology 2024” were Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh, Deputy Minister of Culture Georgi Sultanov and Director of the National History Museum Assoc. Prof. Boni Petrunova.
“Bulgarian Archaeology 2024” will be open to visitors from 15 February to 8 June 2025 in the Central Hall of NAIM on 1, Atanas Burov Sq.
