Scientific secretaries in seven of the nine research areas of BAS were elected by the General Assembly of the Academy at a meeting held on 10 February. According to the Statutes of BAS, the Scientific Secretaries have a term of four years and are part of the leadership team of the President of the Academy.

In the Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies division, Prof. Ivan Georgiev from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies will serve a second term as the Scientific Secretary. Prof. Liliya Angelova from the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy has been elected in the “Energy Resources and Energy Efficiency” division, and Prof. Margarita Popova from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry will be a second term Scientific Secretary in the “Nanosciences, New Materials and Technologies” division. In the area of “Biomedicine and Quality of Life”, the Scientific Secretary will be Prof. Galya Staneva from the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, and Assoc. Prof. Ina Aneva from the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research continues as Scientific Secretary for a second term in the “Biodiversity, Bioresources and Ecology” division.

Assoc. Prof. Mario Ivanov from the National Institute of Archaeology with Museum was elected as Scientific Secretary in the “Cultural and Historical Heritage and National Identity” division. Assoc. Prof. Mariana Tien from the Institute for the State and the Law will be Scientific Secretary in the “Man and Society” division.

A Scientific Secretary for the “Climate Change, Hazards and Natural Resources” and “Astronomy, Space Research and Technologies” divisions is to be elected at the next meeting of the General Assembly of BAS.
