The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva met with the Ambassador of France in Bulgaria H.E. Joël Meyer. The meeting was held at the Academy and was dedicated to the long-standing successful cooperation between BAS and French scientific institutions.

The main focus of the talks was the preparation of a joint event to mark the 60th anniversary of the first agreement between BAS and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). The upcoming event is expected to renew the bilateral agreement between the two institutions which will provide new opportunities for scientific cooperation.

Ambassador Joël Meyer stressed the importance of science as a key pillar in the bilateral relations between Bulgaria and France. He paid special attention to nuclear energy, pointing to the sustainable partnerships between the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy and French scientific organizations. Other significant areas of cooperation are archaeology and palaeontology, and the activities of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum were noted in this regard.

The active role of BAS in initiatives of the French Institute in Bulgaria and the Francophone University Agency (AUF) was also discussed during the meeting. Opportunities for strengthening cooperation under the Horizon Europe, Erasmus+ and other joint initiatives in the framework of EU were discussed.

The meeting was also attended by the Vice-President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evdokia Pasheva, the Director of the French Institute in Bulgaria, Mr. Luc Levy, and Mr. Arnaud Baubérot, the Scientific and University Cooperation Attaché.
