Finds from two of the most emblematic archaeological sites in 2024: the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica near the locality of Rupite and Mound 1 in the village of Kapitan Petko Voyvoda, Topolovgrad municipality, were presented to journalists by the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM at BAS) at a press conference.
The “Bulgarian Archaeology” exhibition is traditionally organized by NAIM-BAS on the occasion of the Day of the Archaeologist on February 14 and presents the best of the previous archaeological season. This year, together with NAIM-BAS, 19 other Bulgarian historical and archaeological museums are presenting their objects. The exhibition will be open to visitors from February 15 in the central hall of the NAIM on 1, Atanas Burov Sq.
For the first time we are making a preliminary presentation of finds from our annual exhibition “Bulgarian Archaeology”. The reason for this is not only the extremely interesting results from the two sites but also our desire to present the restoration work, said the director of NAIM – BAS Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Popov.
There are two objects that the journalists saw without a showcase: the restored head of the second marble statue from the 2nd century, discovered by Prof. Dr. Lyudmil Vagalinski last September in the ancient canal of Heraclea Sintica, and a massive golden head ornament from a horse harness with an image of a snake from the grave of a Thracian ruler discovered by Daniela Agre near the Topolovgrad village of Kapitan Petko Voyvoda last August.
