The General Assembly of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences today has elected new Vice-Presidents and Scientific Secretary-General of BAS. There are three Vice-Presidents – Corr. Memb. DSc. Evdokia Pasheva, Prof. DSc Emmanuel Moutafov and Prof. DSc Shtelian Shterionov. Prof. Dr. Neli Koseva has been elected Scientific Secretary-General.
The election of the new leadership of BAS was held by the General Assembly, after Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva was elected President on December 2, 2024. The colleagues are established scientists with extensive administrative experience; I am convinced of their indisputable qualities, contributions and loyalty to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva said during their presentation to the General Assembly.
Corresponding member Evdokia Pasheva is a Doctor of Biological Sciences. Her research interests are in the field of molecular and cell biology: DNA repair and replication, epigenetic control, chromatin remodeling, carcinogenesis and tumor markers, cell signaling pathways and mechanisms. She has over 70 scientific papers. Her professional career is featured in the FEBS Women’s Career in Science 2024 edition. Corr. Memb. Pasheva has served two terms as Scientific Secretary-General of BAS (2013-2021) and Vice-President of the Academy in the period 2021-2025.
Professor Emmanuel Moutafov holds a Doctor of Sciences degree in modern and recent general history. He is a Byzantologist, epigraphist and art historian at the Institute of Art Studies – BAS. He was the director of the Institute in the period 2014 – 2022. He has over 150 scientific publications, including seven monographs. His texts have been published by such publishers as Cambridge University Press, Brill, Brepols, etc.
Professor Shtelian Shterionov’s areas of professional interest are Bulgarian history, historical demography, economic history, maritime history and traditional maritime culture. He is a professor at the Institute for Population and Human Studies – BAS. He has led and participated in 15 national projects and 7 international projects. His publications include 8 individual monographs, 10 co-authored monographs, compilation of 1 translated monograph, compilation and editing of 5 collections, 29 studies and 60 articles.
Neli Koseva is a professor in the field of chemical sciences. Prof. Koseva’s professional interests are in the field of polymers and polymeric materials with biomedical and environmental applications. She has specialised at the University of London, University of Kobe (Japan), the Polish Academy of Sciences. She is co-author of 96 scientific publications, including 5 review publications, 3 patents and 1 utility model. Prof. Koseva served two terms as the director of the Institute of Polymers – BAS and Scientific Secretary-General of BAS in the period 2021-2025.
