On 17.01.2025, the Honorary Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium in Sofia – H.E. Philippe Beke presented a lecture on “Leadership in Environmental Responsibility, Social Commitment and Efficient Governance as a Marker of the EU in Global Affairs” at BAS. The event was organised by the Centre for National Security and Defence Research (CNSDR) at BAS.

The Director of CNSDR Kamen Iliev opened the meeting and gave the floor to the Vice President of BAS – Corr. Memb. Prof. Stefan Hadjitodorov for a welcome speech on behalf of the Leadership of the Academy. The event was attended by experts and representatives of academia, state administration and public organizations. Special guest was HRH Tsar Simeon II – a long-standing supporter of BAS.

As an introduction to the lecture, Corr. Memb. Alexandre Kostov – member of the Governing Council of BAS, gave a brief overview of the history of Bulgarian-Belgian cooperation over the last 20 years. Kamen Iliev presented the activities of CNSDR through the “Risk-Space-Transfer” Technology Transfer Office in 3 key European projects under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation “Horizon Europe” – Regions4Climate, VALORADA and the recently launched Med-IREN. The projects are related to the use of space technologies for climate adaptation, addressing the adverse effects of climate change and ensuring resilience of critical infrastructure to climate change.

In 2024. CNSDR organized “HEMUS 2024: Research аnd Innovation for Security, Defence and Space Week” jointly with the “Prof. Tsvetan Lazarov” Institute of Defence under the auspices of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium H.E. Frederic Möris. The event was included in the programme of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU and marked the 155th anniversary of the Academy and the 15th anniversary of the Defence Institute.
