The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva opened the international conference “Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe”. The scientific forum takes place from 11 to 13 December at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS. Mathematics is a science that has applications in life, said Corr. Memb. Slavcheva and highlighted its attracting many young women mathematicians. The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS-Sofia) at the institute is organising the event. The President congratulated the scientists for the initiative which had become a tradition and was being held for the fifth time. Corr. Memb. Slavcheva wished the participants interesting discussions and new partnerships.

The “Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe” initiative aims at promoting the role of women scientists working in mathematics, disseminating the results achieved and creating new long-term collaborations between scientists in South-Eastern Europe.

The first conference was held in December 2020 when the special guest was Prof. Mina Teicher from the Gonda Brain Research Center, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, Director of the Emmy Noether Institute for Mathematics. At that time, the organisers stated their intention to make the Science Forum an annual event, and it is held every year in December. The Vice-President of BAS Corr. Memb. Evdokia Pasheva and the Scientific Secretary-General Prof. Neli Koseva attended the event.

The International Conference is supported by the “Increasing research capacity in the field of mathematical sciences” (PIKOM) programme and the Simons Foundation.
