For the first time in the 155-year history of the Academy, a woman is elected President
Corresponding member Evelina Slavcheva has been elected President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for the period 2024-2028 at a meeting of the General Assembly of BAS which was held today at the Academy.
In a statement to the General Assembly, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva thanked her colleagues for their support and stressed that the hard work was just beginning. Only all of us together can continue the successful path of the Academy, she said, and stressed that she would make every effort to make this happen. Corr. Memb. Slavcheva was elected President with 81 supporting votes out of 107 members voting at the General Assembly. The other candidate for President, Acad. Hristo Naidenski, received 19 votes.
The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, congratulated Corr. Memb. Slavcheva for the convincing election and announced that for the first time in the 155-year history of the Academy a woman had been elected President.
My main principle is continuity and modernity, said Corr. Memb. Slavcheva. The successful further development of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for the benefit of society and the state requires both devotion to the scientific field on the part of its thousands of scientists and employees and a modern and flexible management in line with the contemporary needs and challenges, noted Corr. Memb. Slavcheva in her programme for the management and development of BAS.
The areas of scientific interest of Corr. Memb. Slavcheva are electrochemical materials science, corrosion and corrosion protection, electrochemical sensorics and electrochemical functional stimulation. Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva served two terms as President of the General Assembly. She was the Director of the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems of BAS (IEES). She is the founder and head of the “Hydrogen systems with polymer electrolyte” section at IEES and head of 23 scientific research projects.
The mandate of the current President, Prof. Julian Revalski, is expiring on 7 December. A ceremony will take place on 9 December at the BAS where Prof. Julian Revalski will hand over the post to the newly elected President.
