“This is an extremely important initiative for Bulgaria and I am glad that we meet your support and understanding for it. It is important that not only the front door of the country has a name but also that it is the name of the most significant and the greatest European of Bulgaria – Vasil Levski,” Corr. Mem. Atanas Semov said at the beginning of the meeting which took place at the Ministry of Transport and Communications today, at the invitation of Minister Krasimira Stoyanova.

In order a presidential decree for renaming such a site of national importance to be issued, a positive opinion from the Ministry of Transport and Communications is needed which should contain a financial framework and specific steps and deadlines to be taken to make the name change a fact. Minister Krasimira Stoyanova said that she welcomed the idea and together with the competent administration and the concessionaire of Sofia Airport will start work on the preparation of the opinion. The meeting was also attended by Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect, the operator of Sofia Airport.

The idea of renaming the airport has been discussed since 2009, and in 2017, the proposal for the name of the Apostle of Freedom was made by scientists from BAS and received great support but was not implemented. Opinion polls were also conducted which showed widespread approval for the initiative to name the national airport after our most saintly historical figure.
