The Assembly of Academicians of BAS has elected the following new Corresponding Members:

Mathematical Sciences:

Corresponding member Ludmil Katzarkov (born 1961)

He is currently one of the brightest and most respected representatives of Bulgarian mathematics at home and abroad with wide scientific interests. His scientific achievements are in several fields of mathematics and mathematical physics – algebraic, differential and symplectic geometry and topology, string theory, mathematical biology. His rich mathematical background allows him to use approaches and techniques from different mathematical fields to attack classical problems in mathematics that have stood open for a long time.

Corr. Memb. Katzarkov has been one of the main driving forces behind the establishment of the International Center for Mathematical Sciences at IMI which occupies a unique place in the Bulgarian scientific community. As Scientific Director, he has made a significant contribution to the active work of the Institute. Corr. Memb. Ludmil Katzarkov works at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS.

Corresponding member Peter Boyvalenkov (born 1964)

He is currently one of the most respected representatives in Bulgaria and abroad of the Bulgarian school of coding theory. One of the main scientific areas in which he works is a classical and still topical area of mathematics – the theory of spherical codes in finite-dimensional Euclidean space. He is currently one of the authorities there. Apart from its being a purely theoretical subject of interest, this area is also relevant to practice – in coding theory in the study of the reliability function for a Gaussian channel with limited signal strength, in numerical integration, etc.

It is universally acknowledged by the college that Corr. Memb. Boyvalenkov is one of the most active participants in extracurricular work in mathematics and in the preparation of the national team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. Corr. Memb. Peter Boyvalenkov works at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS. He is currently the Director of the Institute.

Corresponding member Nadezhda Ribarska (born 1960)

She is a world-renowned specialist in functional analysis, variational analysis and critical point theory – some of the most dynamically developing areas of mathematics in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the present century. She has answered questions that have been the subject of research by a number of well-known specialists in the field, and many of her results have been a catalyst for further research by other authors. Her research methods include a combination of methods from topology, functional and classical analysis with direct applications to optimization theory with great potential for future development.

She works at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Sofia University and at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS.

Physical Science:

Corresponding member Nikolay Nedyalkov (born 1973)

He established the field of laser nanostructuring and plasmonics in Bulgaria. He works in the areas of photonics, materials processing with short and ultra-short laser pulses, optical properties of nanomaterials, laser assisted nanotechnology and applications. Corr. Memb. Nedyalkov works at the Institute of Electronics of BAS.

Corresponding member Evgeni Semkov (born 1960)

He is a prominent Bulgarian scientist in the field of observational astronomy. At the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory, he studies the photometric and spectral variability of young variable stars, active galactic nuclei, quasars and blazars. He works at the Institute of Astronomy at BAS.

Chemical Sciences:

Corresponding member Georgi Vayssilov (born 1963)

He is a world-renowned scientist in the field of quantum chemical modelling of catalytic systems and materials. Vayssilov’s particularly important achievements are in the study of zeolite catalysts, microporous materials of great industrial importance for the purification of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. His scientific achievements have shown that his theoretical research, in addition to representing a significant fundamental scientific contribution, also supports the solution of important industrial, environmental and biochemical problems.

Corresponding member Petar Petrov (born 1972)

He is an established scientist with significant contributions in the field of Polymers and Polymeric Materials. Prof. Petrov is the most recognizable and with the highest scientific metrics active scientist of polymer science in our country. His scientific achievements are contributions to the modern scientific fields of nanomedicine, nanotechnology, biomaterials and renewable energy.

Earth Sciences:

Corresponding member Daniela /Neli/ Jordanova (born 1969)

Specialty geophysics: earth magnetism, soil magnetism

She works in a promising field of geophysics, having realized together with the laboratory led by her significant contributions in several directions in the study of earth magnetism: /1/ study of anthropogenic pollution of the environment with magnetometric methods; /2/ study of the pedogenesis of soils in Bulgaria through magnetic studies of soil profiles; application of magnetometric methods in archaeology, such as the introduction of a new method for Bulgaria for determining the firing temperature of clay vessels.

Corr. Memb. Jordanova received the 2019 Pythagoras Award for Distinguished Scientist in the Natural Sciences and Engineering.

Corresponding member Nikolay Bonev (born 1966)

Speciality geology: regional geology, geotectonics

He is a professor (2018) at the Faculty of Geology and Geography of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The main achievement is his results of the study of the Circum-Rhodope belt which represents the geodynamic transition between the Tethys Ocean and the Peri-Tethys region, of importance during the last 250 million years. The regional geological study has been successfully synthesized in a number of publications and his two monographs with the results of complex modern studies with the methods of geological mapping, stratigraphy, structural geology, geochemistry, petrology, isotopic geochronology.

Engineering sciences:

Corresponding Member Georgi Dimitrov Todorov (born 1961)

His scientific and applied achievements are in the fields of: virtual engineering, engineering analyses, simulation modeling, 3D technologies, rapid prototyping technologies and implantology. He is Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology at the Technical University of Sofia.

Biosciences:

Corresponding Member Soren Bohos Hayrabedyan (born 1972)

His main scientific contributions are in the field of reproductive immunology, molecular immunopathology and carcinogenesis, cell signalling, in silico modelling of receptor-ligand interactions and bioinformatics of signalling pathways. He works at the Institute of Biology and Immunology of Reproduction, BAS.

Corresponding Member Violeta Borisova Velikova (born 1963)

Her main scientific achievements are in the field of plant ecophysiology and contributions to the study of changes in the functional activity and structure of the photosynthetic apparatus induced by various stresses. She works at the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics, BAS.

Medical Sciences:

Corresponding Member Ivo Spasov Petrov (born 1965)

His research interests are in cardiology, angiology, invasive cardiology and radiology. He has developed innovative methods in the field of endovascular cardiology, introduced many innovative therapeutic methods, stenting of renal and visceral arterial vessels, renal sympathetic denervation, etc.

Corresponding Member Slavcho Tomov Tomov (born 1962)

His scientific and professional interests are mainly in the field of gynaecological oncology. He introduced the surgical treatment of malignant and benign tumors of the female genital organs and robotic and laparoscopic gynecological surgery in the country. He is currently the Director of the Research Institute at the Medical University – Pleven. Head of a Center of Competence (Leonardo Da Vinci- 3D and Telemedicine, robotic and minimally invasive surgery). The Centre comprises the Institute of Robotics at BAS and the Medical University – Varna.

Agricultural Sciences:

Corresponding Member Ivan Iliev Atanasov (born 1962).

His scientific and applied contributions include: the identification of genetic diversity and genetic resources of economically important plant species such as grapevine, oil rose, lavender, sunflower and other agricultural crops; molecular markers have been developed and implemented to assess the biodiversity, genetic identity and homogeneity of cyanobacteria, production strains of lactic acid bacteria, grapevine seedlings, etc. ; participates in the creation of the “Bulgarian database on plant genomics” of economically important crops for the country. He works at the AgroBioInstitute (ABI) of the Agricultural Academy where he has been Director since 2017.

Corresponding member Ilia Tsachev Tsachev (born 1960)

His main scientific and applied contributions concern: study of hepatitis E in sheep, goats, horses, cattle, dogs and cats; detection of 3 viral subtypes – I, J, K BovHepV gt 1 in cattle and gt 2 in deer, stags and mouflons; introduction of SNAP ELISA in house diagnostics in the country; contributes to the promotion of knowledge on zoonotic diseases. He works in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Thracian University.

Humanities and Social Sciences:

Corresponding Member Vladimir Stefanov Chukov (born 1960)

He has authored multi- and interdisciplinary research and is one of the most worthy names of a highly professional researcher and educator of national and international renown. His research on radical Islamic fundamentalism occupies a central place in his work. He has made major contributions to the history and theory of Islamic statecraft and jurisprudence. His research offers wide-ranging professional expertise and brings out profound theoretical contributions.

Corresponding Member Boris Vladimirov Velchev (born 1962)

One of the most authoritative creators of criminal law science. Boris Velchev’s scholarly works are devoted to the truly essential problems of Bulgarian criminal law and contain numerous well-founded proposals for amendments to the legislation. With his unquestionable expertise, he has participated in the work of state and government bodies. He has played an indispensable role in the training of legal personnel in Bulgaria and in building the elite of today’s Bulgarian legal community.

Arts and Art Studies:

Corresponding Member Teodora Dimitrova Dimova (born 1960)

She used to be a journalist, translator and English teacher. Currently she works at the Radio Theater Department of the Bulgarian National Radio. Columnist for the Culture Portal. Author of 12 books and 9 plays translated abroad. Her best known novels are “The Mothers” “The Defeated”, “I Don’t Know You”, etc. She is an artist with a bright public position who has received great recognition at home and abroad. She has won a number of national literary awards from various institutions.

Corresponding Member Zhivka Boykova Marinova (born 1979)

Painter, Senior Assistant Professor in Painting at the National Academy of Art and Head of Atelier 50. She has participated in numerous joint projects, has held solo exhibitions and has participated in general art exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. She paints in the genre of landscape and still life in different colour ranges. She has won various awards in Bulgaria and abroad.

Up to 50 years old:

Corresponding Member Georgi Tsvetanov Momekov (born 1976)

He is Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Medical University-Sofia. His expertise and scientific competence is widely used. His main scientific contributions are in the field of experimental antitumor chemotherapy, oncopharmacology, design of antineoplastic drugs, search for new compounds with antitumor activity, study of molecular mechanisms of action of new and traditional drugs.
