A solemn assembly on the occasion of May 24 was held today at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The President of the General Assembly of BAS Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva opened the event for the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture and of the Slavonic literature. May 24 is a holiday hidden deep in the heart of every Bulgarian, Corr. Memb. Slavcheva said and added that it was an expression of the spiritual growth of our nation, of our aspiration for progress and improvement through the achievements of science and culture.
The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, delivered a welcoming speech for the celebration. On this day, we acknowledge the Bulgarian proponents of science, education and culture and take stock of their achievements and prospects, he said. In his words, the Academy today is a successful model for interdisciplinary research initiatives in which a huge scientific potential has been invested, uniting different research fields in impressive projects and infrastructures. On the other hand, they make our cultural traditions part of the spiritual heritage of Europe whose patron saints are the Thessalonian brothers Cyril and Methodius – a symbol of unity and mutual respect among the peoples of our continent, Prof. Revalski said.
President Rumen Radev sent a congratulatory address on the occasion of the solemn assembly at the Accademy. “BAS is a pillar of the enlightenment spirit and the centuries-old academic traditions. The unwavering course of development of fundamental and applied sciences as well as our achievements in all modern divisions are a guarantor of the progress of Bulgarian society,” the congratulatory address reads.
Writer Georgi Gospodinov, who is a corresponding member of BAS, delivered an academic address for May 24.
In “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS, representatives of ministries, universities and businesses were present. Guests at the festive assembly were also participants in the “Cyril and Methodius” European Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, the host of whose annual assembly is the city of Sofia. An interior version of the exhibition “Once and Now. The Glorification of Cyrillo-Methodian Work in the Modern World” of the Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre of BAS is exposed at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The posters of the exhibition mark some of the places associated with the turning points in the work of the holy brothers and their disciples.
