Virtual interactive models of authentic folk costumes and three-dimensional models of archaeological sites were shown by scientists to Commissioner Iliana Ivanova

Scientists from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of BAS presented the possibilities of state-of-the-art tools for 3D digitalization to the Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Iliana Ivanova. 3D models obtained by laser scanning, close-range and aerial photogrammetry methods were demonstrated. The scientists also showed the Commissioner virtual interactive scenes with models of authentic folk costumes from the collection of the National Ethnographic Museum as well as three-dimensional models of archaeological sites. During the visit, the researchers also presented how the laser scanning and computed tomography systems work, as well as the results of research conducted with them.

The scientific infrastructure is part of the 3D Digitization and Microstructural Analysis Laboratory of the Center of Excellence in Computer Science and Information and Communication Technologies. The coordinator of the Centre is the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of BAS. The project is funded through the “Science and Education for Smart Growth” Operational Programme of the European Regional Development Fund.

The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, and the Head of the Centre of Excellence, Corr. Memb. Svetozar Margenov briefed Iliana Ivanova on the project activities. “Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies” is one of the most dynamic divisions at BAS as technologies are constantly entering our lives, said Prof. Revalski and added that this research is related to applications in all areas of life.

The Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth thanked for the opportunity to see the results of the successfully implemented European project. The scientific infrastructure at the Centre provides free access for scientists to exchange ideas and practices, Iliana Ivanova said.

The Commissioner’s visit took place within the framework of an Open Day at the Centre of Excellence for Informatics and Information and Communication Technologies. Results of the project were presented to media and students.
