On 30 and 31 October 2023, the Institute of Balkan Studies and Center of Thracology – BAS held a scientific conference on “Turkish Modernity – Political, Social and Cultural Dimensions of the XIX-XX Centuries”. The occasion for the event was the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923. In the scientific forum, 17 scholars- presented reports from the Institute of Balkan Studies-BAS, the Institute of Historical Studies-BAS, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski, Plovdiv University, ULSIT and other scientific institutions. Topics related to the Ottoman modernization, the birth of the modern Turkish state, political, migratory and cultural processes in the history and modernity of the modern Turkish state were discussed.
The scientific forum summarized the achievements of the Institute of Balkan Studies, which are the fruit of the long-standing scientific research of specialists in Balkan studies, Ottoman history and modern Turkey and those of the scholars from the cited scientific institutions. The research of the scholars of the Institute will continue in the coming years, especially in the context of the upcoming centenary in 2025 of the signing of the Ankara Treaty between Bulgaria and the Turkish Republic and its ratification in 1926, after which Bulgarian-Turkish diplomatic relations were established which the two countries have maintained without interruption to this day.
