Acad. Ivan Todorov is one of the world’s most eminent Bulgarian scientists – physicists. He is known for his contributions to mathematical physics, in particular quantum field theory. He has made significant contributions in the field of Axiomatic Quantum Field Theory and two-dimensional conformal theories and is among the founders of the school of mathematical physics in Bulgaria which has gained recognition in scientific circles.
Professor at the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) and Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 1967. Elected Academician – in 1974 (at the age of 40 – the youngest academician in Bulgaria then).
Acad. Todorov has also worked at numerous scientific institutes around the world, such as the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, the Institute for Advanced Scientific Research in Bours sur Yvette, near Paris, France, and the Erwin Schrödinger Institute in Vienna, Austria.
He is the author of over 250 scientific papers, 11 monographs by specialized publishers. He is a recipient of the Order of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, Second Degree (1983), the “François the First” Medal of the Collège de France in Paris, France (1986), the Order of “Marin Drinov” (2003), the Order of “Sts. Cyril and Methodius” First Degree (2005), Order of “Stara Planina” first degree (2014).
“In Pythagorean philosophy (and religion) numbers are sacred as the most pure and disembodied of ideas. The contemplation of geometrical forms and the attainment of mathematical laws are the most effective means of purification of the soul and the main link between man and the divine” wrote Academician Ivan Todorov in his book “Science, Personalities, Experiences” (“Наука, личности, преживяно”) published in 2014.
