The 2023 Award for Discovery was given to Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski from NAIM-BAS

The third international forum “Brand Bulgaria – Touch the Wonders” was held at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The event was organized by the Cultural Heritage Society (Europa Nostra Bulgaria) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture and under the patronage of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel. With a minute of silence the participants in the forum paid tribute to the victims of the flood in Tsarevo.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel, the Minister of Culture Krastyu Krastev, the President of the Cultural Heritage Society (Europe Nostra Bulgaria) Slavka Bozukova and the Vice President of Europa Nostra Piet Jaspaert spoke about the priorities, goals and objectives for the promotion of Brand Bulgaria.

During the event at BAS, a ceremony for the annual awards “The Wonders of Bulgaria” 2023 took place. Two major awards were presented – “Discovery ” and “Attraction” of the year 2023, as well as the traditional nine awards of the tourist regions.

The votive plate of the Thracian Horseman in Heraclea Sintica is “Discovery of the year 2023”. Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski from the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of BAS (NAIM), who led the archaeological excavations of the ancient city, was singled out for it. He received the award from the Minister of Culture Krastyu Krastev.

For the development of Thracology and the cultural heritage in Bulgaria, a special award was given to Prof. DSc Valeria Fol from the Institute of Balkan Studies with Center of Thracology – BAS (IBSCT).

The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, awarded a special prize to Elliniki Etairia – Europa Nostra Greece. With the active role of Europa Nostra Bulgaria, the first international hiking project “The Path of Chans”: Madan-Rudozem-Xanthi is currently being developed. The award was received by Ioana Mikrou who was a member of the Board of Directors.

Under the patronage of UNESCO, the international conference “Digital presentation and preservation of cultural and scientific heritage” was held for the thirteenth time in Burgas,  Prof. Julian Revalski announced. This is just one of the examples of the traditions the Academy has in the field of cultural and historical heritage, he said and noted the importance of the link with innovations. In the future, we will continue to be partners of this initiative and contribute – to show the world the rich cultural and historical heritage of our country. The President of BAS also recalled the important role of the four museums of the Academy in this field.
