President Rumen Radev awarded Dr. Vesselin Dimitrov the 2023 Mathematics Prize of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics – for outstanding contribution to number theory and Diophantine geometry
The official opening of the international conference Mathematics Days in Sofia (MDS2023) took place today at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. More than 200 scientists from over 30 countries are participating in the traditional meeting of Bulgarian mathematicians in Bulgaria who will present new results in classical and modern areas of mathematics and computer science from 10 to 14 July 2023.
The initiative is held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev, who welcomed the participants from BAS and the universities, the foreign guests and the young scientists of Bulgaria, stressing that they honorably represent our country in the leading institutions around the world.
“Mathematics gives wings to the imagination, embraces the vast and gives us the strength to penetrate beyond the infinite, in search of new worlds,” President Radev said. The Head of State thanked scientists for working with young people to develop their enormous potential – whether in Bulgaria or around the world, he noted.
I would like to congratulate you for your important goal – to strengthen the ties and develop the cooperation with the Bulgarian mathematical diaspora around the world, as well as for the work with leading mathematicians from all over the world because mathematics requires sharing knowledge, the President said in his speech.
The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, the Director of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences Acad. Oleg Mushkarov, the Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS Prof. Peter Boyvalenkov and the President of the Union of Mathematicians in Bulgaria Corr. Memb. Nikolai Nikolov gave greetings.
During the opening ceremony, President Rumen Radev presented the 2023 Mathematics Award of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (IMI) to Dr. Vesselin Dimitrov. He received this recognition for his outstanding contribution to number theory and Diophantine geometry.
The prize was presented by the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski who is the Chairman of the Prize Committee for 2023. The Mathematics Prize of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics was established in 2014 and is awarded every three years to a Bulgarian mathematician aged up to 40 for excellence in mathematics. The winner of the Prize is determined by an international committee consisting of distinguished experts in the field of mathematics. Vesselin Dimitrov is the fourth laureate of the IMI Mathematics Prize. He was born in Sofia in 1986. He graduated from the National High School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In 2003 he was selected to represent Bulgaria at the prestigious six-week summer school of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Research Science Institute (RSI). In 2005 he participated in the International Mathematics Olympiad, where he won a silver medal.
Vesselin Dimitrov continued his studies at Harvard University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 2010 with a thesis under the supervision of Prof. Barry Mazur. He received his M.A. (2014) and Ph.D. (2017) degrees from Yale University. His research supervisor is Prof. Alexander Goncharov. Dr. Dimitrov is currently a member of the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton and an associate professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. In 2022, Dr Dimitrov was awarded the Oberwolfach Prize for “his outstanding contributions to number theory and Diophantine geometry”. He is also the winner of the David Gross Prize (which he shares with Ziyang Gao).
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, together with the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the Union of Mathematicians in Bulgaria are the organisers of the event.
The high quality of Bulgarian mathematicians and computer scientists has been talked about for a long time, and today many of them work in prestigious universities and research centers outside Bulgaria. One of the main objectives of the scientific forum is to strengthen and deepen ties with the Bulgarian mathematical diaspora by providing an environment for successful collaborative research activities to reach the sought-after and much needed answers and results in all areas of human development.
