An exhibition “Cajal, 170 years”, dedicated to the Spanish Nobel laureate Santiago Ramon y Cajal, was opened today at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The exhibition is on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the birth of the Spanish scientist and the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Cajal Institute. Santiago Ramon y Cajal is considered the founder of neuroscience for his discoveries about the mechanisms that govern the morphology and connecting processes of nerve cells.

This exhibition tells the story of Cajal’s remarkable life, his great contributions and dedication to science. His illustrations are still used in medical textbooks today, said the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy.

The Ambassador of Spain H.E. Alejandro Polanco thanked BAS and the Ministry of Health for their support in the realisation of the exhibition on Cajal. This exhibition will be displayed in all Bulgarian medical universities to continue sharing the knowledge of Cajal, Ambassador Polanco said in his speech.

The exhibition “Cajal, 170 Years” is situated in the Central Foyer of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Organizer is the Embassy of Spain in Bulgaria.

The exhibition summarizes the world discoveries that brought the scientist the Nobel Prize in 1906 and shows how his contribution served as a basis for the development of Bulgarian neuroscience. The panels also reveal the multifaceted personality of Ramon y Cajal who was also involved in teaching, drawing, literature and photography, becoming a pioneer of photographic colouring techniques in Spain. The exhibition can be seen until 16 June at BAS.
