The 4th International Workshop “Size-Dependent Effect in Materials for Environmental Protection and Energy Application (SizeMat 4) is taking place from 10 to 14 May 2023 in Pomorie. The forum is dedicated to size-dependent effects in materials for environmental protection and clean energy generation as an innovative approach in the development of alternative materials with improved properties. The workshop is organized by the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry at BAS (IGIC – BAS), which is one of the leading scientific organisations in Bulgaria in the field of materials chemistry. The SizeMat 4 Workshop is implemented within the framework of the project “European Science Network on Materials for Clean Technologies” (TwinTeam), coordinated by IGIC-BAS. It brought together around 105 scientists to present and discuss current trends in the development of next-generation materials in three main areas – A: Materials and thin films for environmental protection, B: Materials for clean energy storage and C: Ceramics/bioceramics and glasses for better life (with applications in optics, molecular electronics and medicine). The workshop was attended by distinguished international scientists from the three TwinTeam partner organisations, leaders in the field of innovative materials: Imperial College London (UK), Institute for Applied Materials – Energy Storage Systems at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) and Institute of Materials Science at the University of Seville (Spain). The forum was attended by many young scientists, PhD students and students from IGIC-BAS, FCP-SU and other institutes of BAS. SizeMat 4 is the fourth in a series of international seminars in Bulgaria, organised by IGIC-BAS, which again attracted the interest of the scientific community to the selected topic.

The Forum was opened by Prof. Dr. Radostina Stoyanova, Director of IGIC – BAS, who presented the topics and the scientific programme. A welcome to the participants of SizeMat 4 was given by the Mayor of the town of Pomorie Mr. Ivan Aleksiev. Two poster sessions were held and more than 75 papers were presented. SizeMat 4 will end with the awarding of 5 prizes with the financial support of the Materials journal, MDPI, for the best presentation of young scientists at the Forum. The workshop programme as well as the abstracts of the papers and poster presentations are available on the electronic website: http://twinteam.igic.bas.bg/sizemat4/). The results presented at the scientific forum will be published in a special issue on “Size-Dependent Effects in Materials for Environmental Protection and Energy Application” of the Materials journal (IF 3.748, Q1), MDPI.
