The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences awarded the Institute of Catalysis of BAS with an Honorary Silver Plaquette on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. The distinction is also awarded for significant scientific achievements in the field of development of new catalysts and cutting-edge technologies with environmental orientation.
The solemn celebration on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Catalysis was held in the Seminar Hall of the Institute. On behalf of the Management Board of the Academy, the Vice-President Corr. Mem. Stefan Hadjidodorov presented the award to the Director Prof. Silvia Todorova. Undoubtedly, the institute has established itself as a leader in the field of catalysis in the country, said the Vice President. The Institute of Catalysis is an internationally recognized and significant research and educational center where modern science is created and highly qualified personnel are trained, the congratulatory address added.
The director of the institute Prof. Todorova said that 25% of the employees in the scientific unit are under 30 years of age and over 70 PhD students have been trained. She presented the main activities and projects, patents, implemented developments and participation in consortia, as well as scientific achievements, national and international partnerships over the past 40 years. Scientists were honoured with awards for their meritorious contributions to the goals and objectives of the institute.
The President of the General Assembly of BAS, Corr. Mem. Evelina Slavcheva, the Scientific Secretary of BAS in the division of “Nanosciences, New Materials and Technologies” Prof. Margarita Popova, colleagues from the Academy’s institutes and universities attended the celebration.
The Institute of Catalysis of BAS was established on 01.04.1983 on the basis of the laboratory “Kinetics and Catalysis” which had started its activity in 1963, and is now the leading center of catalysis in the country and Southeast Europe. The Institute develops catalytic materials with regulated structure and properties for use in processes to protect the environment and improve the quality of life, new industrial catalysts and adsorbents, supports for catalysts, photocatalysts and zeolites, for the production of alternative fuels (hydrogen), for the utilization of new energy sources, etc.
