The World Water Day on March 22 and the World Meteorological Day on March 23 were celebrated by representatives of academia, government institutions, business and education at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The celebration is an initiative of the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute of BAS (CAWRI-BAS), the Bulgarian Water Association (BWA) and with the support of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW).
Every year on 22 March, the world celebrates World Water Day. This year, the official theme is dedicated to the efforts of scientists to accelerate change in protecting the priceless resource of water. World Meteorological Day is celebrated on 23 March. This year’s theme is “The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations” and is about our responsibility to future generations. It is a day to take stock of the merit and contribution of scientific developments and expertise related to weather, climate and water. In the year of “Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development” declared by the United Nations, these themes highlight the need for more investment in basic research globally and nationally as the basis for all innovations and sustainable solutions to address humanity’s risks related to climate change and scarce water resources.
The Director of CAWRI, Corr. Mem. Ekaterina Bachvarova, opened the two-day forum. The Ministers of Environment and Water, and Regional Development and Public Works welcomed the participants and guests. On behalf of the Management of BAS, a congratulatory address was delivered by the Scientific Secretary-General Prof. Neli Koseva. The scientific analyses and evaluations of the scientists of CAWRI are the basis for studying the problems and pointing out the prospects for water management in Bulgaria and studying climate change, the address stated.
The President of BWA, Eng. Ivan Ivanov, announced the winners of the photo contest “The Nature of Water”, which is organized annually by the association. The Deputy Minister of MEW Reneta Koleva awarded the first prize to the winner of the contest Vasil Nikolov. The exhibition can be seen at BAS until 24 March. Teachers and students from 203 “St. Methodius” High School for Foreign Languages presented projects in the field of climate change.
The programme of the two-day forum included discussions on important topics for Bulgaria such as water management in the country, water resources in the face of climate change, innovative technical solutions to reduce the human footprint on nature, air quality and health, environmental protection, adaptation of curricula for pupils and students and others. The event is also related to the work of the scientists of CAWRI-BAS in various projects.
