The International Center for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS-Sofia) at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of BAS will receive a grant from the Simons Foundation, one of the largest charitable organizations in the United States. This was announced during a lecture of Prof. Yuri Tschinkel. The lecture was held at the Intercontinental Hotel Sofia. The grant amounts to over BGN 1 million for a period of 3 years.
The world-famous mathematician Prof. Yuri Tschinkel is Head of the Department of Mathematics of Courant Institute at New York University, USA, and Director of the Mathematics and Physical Sciences Division of the Simons Foundation. Prof. Tschinkel gave a lecture on Building Scientific Institutes to scientists, government and business representatives. He presented the history of major world-renowned institutes that were established with the support of private capital. The mathematician focused on the collaboration of researchers from different countries and inspiring young scientists in the world of science.
The visit of Prof. Yuri Tschinkel to Bulgaria was at the invitation of the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy. Importantly, the Simons Foundation recognises the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences as a promising science centre. According to him, this is a great recognition for the work of Bulgarian mathematicians at the Centre which was officially established three years ago. Prof. Revalski added that with this Bulgaria will become known in the world. He thanked Prof. Tschinkel for his support in the establishment of the International Centre and the Ministry of Education and Science for the development of this idea.
The Simons Foundation supports research in four scientific areas: mathematics and physical sciences; life sciences; autism research; and education, engagement and outreach by funding scientists, institutions and scientific infrastructure.
Individual Support Programmes provide long-term research funding to distinguished scientists, as well as grants for research visits and collaborative travel. The scientific director of the International Centre, Prof. Ludmil Katzarkov, is among the researchers supported by the Foundation.
