The Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBPhBME) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has established a tradition of holding a Youth Scientific Session “Biomedicine and Quality of Life” every two years. The scientific session will be held for the third time, online, on 2-3 December 2021.
The main organizer of the event is IBPhBME – BAS, with the kind support of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, the ScienceUp Career Center and the companies Aquachim AD and FOT Ltd.
The Youth Scientific Session will be held in six thematic areas in the field of biomedicine:
– Biomaterials, Cell and Tissue Engineering
– Biological membranes and biomacromolecules
– Molecular and Cellular Biophysics
– Biomedical Engineering
– Bioinformatics
– Excitable structures and motor activity
Guest speakers at the Youth Scientific Session will be distinguished scientists working in the field of biomedicine and quality of life: Prof. Dr. Plamen Ivanov from Boston University, USA; Prof. Dr. Rumiana Bakalova from the University of Nagasaki, Japan; Prof. Dr. Rumiana Dimova from the Max-Planck Institute, Germany; Prof. Dr. Neus Gabarella from the University of Lleida, Spain; Prof. Dr. Krassimira Tsaneva-Atanasova from the University of Exeter, UK; Prof. Dr. Raffaele Gravina from the University of Calabria, Italy; Prof. Dr. Anela Ivanova from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Bulgaria; and PhD student Deyana Ivanova from King’s College, London, UK.
Some of the most inspiring lecturers in the field of science communication with society and media, entrepreneurship in science and career development will also take part in the scientific session, such as Assoc. Prof. Vladimir Bozhilov, Faculty of Physics of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and Public Relations Department at the Bulgarian National Science Fund; Dr. Nikola Kerekov, Ratio Platform; Dr. Justine Toms, New Bulgarian University and Milena Petkova, Karoll Knowledge Foundation.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vassia Atanassova from IBPhBME – BAS will present to the audience the vision and mission of the Research Infrastructure for Advanced Studies of Biomolecules, Biomembranes and Biosignals (BioMMS), to be built in partnership with the Institute of Molecular Biology “Acad. Rumen Tsanev” and the Institute of Solid State Physics “Acad. Georgi Nadjakov” at BAS within the National Roadmap for Scientific Infrastructures.
More than 30 young scientists will participate in the Third Youth Scientific Session “Biomedicine and Quality of Life” and will give oral presentations of their research. Over 80 listeners have also registered for the event.
