Four new full members (academicians) in the field of biological and engineering sciences have been elected today by the Assembly of Academicians of BAS. No academician has been elected in the scientific area of Earth Sciences.
In the Biological Sciences Branch, the following have been elected academicians:
Academician Rumen Georgiev Pankov. He was born in 1955. He is a world-renowned scientist in the field of cell and molecular biology. He works at the Faculty of Biology of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. In 2012, he was elected a corresponding member of BAS.
Academician Draga Ivanova Toncheva. She was born in 1950. She is a world-renowned specialist in the field of medical genetics and genomics. She works at the Medical Faculty of the Medical University – Sofia. In 2015, she was elected a corresponding member of BAS.
In the Engineering Sciences Branch, the following have been elected academicians:
Academician Krassimir Todorov Atanassov. He was born in 1954. World-renowned scientist in the field of intelligent systems. He defined the concept of “generalized nets” and developed a theory encompassing their connections with various modifications and other structures. He also defined the concept of Intuitionistic fuzzy sets and initiated intensive research on this important non-classical type of fuzzy systems. He works at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering of BAS. In 2012, he was elected a corresponding member of BAS.
Academician Hristo Ivanov Beloev was born in 1958. He is a leading Bulgarian scientist in the research, development and implementation of modern agricultural machinery and new anti-weather, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies for flat and sloping terrains. He is the Rector of “Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse. In 2014, he was elected a corresponding member of BAS.
