A donation of BGN 50 000 for research by the scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the fight against coronavirus was made by Delyan Peevski, MP from the “Movement for Rights and Freedoms”. The donation received will be earmarked for the “Science against COVID-19” project proposed by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The project envisages the accomplishment of important scientific and applied tasks related to the diagnosis, treatment and creation of coronavirus vaccines.

The work will cover bioinformatic screening for biologically active compounds for application as medicines or immunostimulants, developing vaccines against the new coronavirus, creating molecular biological tests for the mass detection of coronaviruses and other pathogens and creating new diagnostic approaches for coronavirus infections, based on cell cultivation and study of epigenetic modulation as an approach for protection against the infection. More generally, these activities can evolve into an overall strategy for the control of infectious diseases in humans and contribute to the sustainable development of society to meet future health challenges.

The work on the project will be carried out by scientists from four institutes of BAS: Institute of Molecular Biology “Roumen Tsanev”, Institute of Microbiology “Stephan Angeloff”, Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering and Institute of Experimental Morphology, Pathology and Morphology with Museum, in cooperation with other scientific organizations
