The Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy hosted the fourth international conference on cyclotron physics which was held from 21 to 24 November 2019 in the town of Varshets.
The event was opened with a welcome speech by the Mayor of Varshets Municipality, eng. Ivan Lazarov, and the Deputy Director of the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy Prof. Dimitar Tonev in his role of organizer and host.
Traditionally, the forum brings together distinguished scientists and experts from Bulgaria and the world. Lecturers from Italy, France, Germany and Russia as well as representatives of leading organizations in the field of nuclear energy and nuclear medicine participated in the conference this year. Eng. Alexander Nikolov, Deputy Director of Kozloduy NPP EAD, expressed the opinion that “this project is strategic for Bulgaria because it not only prepares personnel for the safe work of the nuclear sector but also focuses the efforts of scientists to solve socially significant problems such as the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses.”
The panel discussed issues related to the latest and topical research, achievements and trends in cyclotron physics, the production and successful use of isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals in the treatment of tumor diseases as well as possible strategies for overcoming tumor resistance to radiation therapy.
