The Assembly of Academicians of BAS has elected the following new Corresponding Members: Mathematical Sciences: Corresponding member Ludmil Katzarkov (born 1961) He is currently one of the brightest and most respected representatives of Bulgarian mathematics at home and abroad with wide scientific interests. His scientific achievements are in several fields of mathematics and mathematical physics - algebraic, differential and symplectic geometry and topology, string theory, mathematical biology. Newly elected academicians of BAS

Elections for new members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (academicians and corresponding members) are held from 24 to 28 September. The Assembly of Academicians has elected the following new academicians of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences:       Mathematical Sciences: Academician Stefan Petrov Ivanov (born 1957) His scientific interests are in the field of geometry and mathematical physics. He is an internationally recognized and established specialist in Riemannian and complex differential geometry, string theories, quaternion geometry, etc., with some of his strongest results in string theories and geometry. Donation campaign of AACM in support of children and young people

The Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (AACM - BAS) donated BGN 35 000 collected personal funds to the Social Protection Fund. The amount will be used to purchase mobile devices - tablets to support the educational process of children and young people housed in family-type accommodation centers across the country. AACM-BAS conducts donation campaigns every year. In 2020, the academicians and corresponding members of BAS decided to use the funds raised to overcome the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In memoriam

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with deep sadness announces that on 19 January 2020, after a short illness, Academician Blagovest Hristov Sendov passed away at the age of 87. Acad. Blagovest Sendov was a world-renowned Bulgarian mathematician, eminent statesman and public figure. Academician Sendov was born on 8 February 1932 in Asenovgrad. In 1956, he graduated in Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics of Sofia University "St. Kl. Ohridski ”; from 1960 to 1961 specialized in Moscow State University; in 1964 defended his PhD thesis and in 1967 became doctor of science. In 1968, he was elected professor of computational mathematics, in 1974 - corresponding member of BAS, and in 1981 - academician. Three Academicians of BAS with state honors from the President of the Republic of Bulgaria

Three full members of BAS were honored by President Rumen Radev with state awards at a ceremony at the Coat-of-Arms Hall in the Presidency. These are Academician Vladimir Ovcharov, Academician Chavdar Roumenin and Academician Angel Galabov. Academician Vladimir Ovcharov was awarded the Order "St. Cyril and Methodius“ - pendant for contribution to the development of medical science and education in Bulgaria. Leading ophthalmologists gathered at BAS on World Vision Day
