Japanese cherry trees at the Geological Institute of BAS for Earth Day

  The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences celebrated the World Earth Day at the initiative of the Geological Institute (GI-BAS) on 21 April. Three cherry trees were planted in front of the Institute's building with the kind assistance of the Japanese Embassy in Bulgaria. The Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Narahira, and the Director of the Geological Institute of BAS Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev planted the Japanese cherry trees in the presence of the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy. The planting of a tree identifies the relationship "man - planet" and has a special symbolic meaning. World Water Day 22 March and World Meteorological Day 23 March

  The World Water Day on March 22 and the World Meteorological Day on March 23 were celebrated by representatives of academia, government institutions, business and education at the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The celebration is an initiative of the Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute of BAS (CAWRI-BAS), the Bulgarian Water Association (BWA) and with the support of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW). 75 years Geological Institute of BAS

The Geological Institute "Strashimir Dimitrov" of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences marked its 75th anniversary with a celebration held on 15 November at “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS. The director Prof. Radoslav Nakov presented the main aspects of the Institute's activities and recalled the mission of the scientists - to study the geological systems and georesources on the territory of Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula. Scientists seek ways to reduce the risk of adverse events and natural disasters

Computer simulations of the climate on the territory of the Balkan Peninsula and the Black Sea region have been developed by scientists under the National Science Programme “Environmental Protection and Reduction of the Risk of Adverse Events and Natural Disasters”. As a result, regional climate databases have been generated for the periods 1975-2005 (current climate), 2020-2050 (near future) and 2070-2100 (far future). Simulations of future climates were made for the three commonly accepted global climate change scenarios: optimistic, stabilizing and pessimistic. A number of climate indices are calculated that assess the impact of a given past/present and/or future climate on the environment, human health, ecosystems and various aspects of economic activity. 5th International Competition “Karst under protection – gift for the future generations“

The competition is a Bulgarian initiative (2005).
