BAS presents Ivailo Kamenov and his “Transfigurations”

  An exhibition by Ivailo Kamenov entitled "Transfigurations" opened last night at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The exhibition is part of the "BAS Presents" initiative and includes paintings (oil, watercolor, and pastel) and bronze reliefs. "The themes of Ivailo Kamenov's work are always related to Orthodox Christianity but they also look to the Far East and always with undisguised humanism. It is precisely this love for humanity that is the distinctive feature of this artist. Scientist for a Day Initiative

Students from five schools in Sofia are participating in the “Scientist for a Day” initiative organized by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian Embassy in Sofia. The event is dedicated to International Women's Day on March 8, said BAS Vice-President Corr. Memb. Evdokia Pasheva who introduced the participants. The initiative will allow students to learn about the work of researchers from various fields at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - Physics, Astronomy, History, Mathematics and information technology, Biology and chemistry, and Bioinformatics. The SUDEM project has been presented at a press conference

A press conference on “The SUDEM strategic European project, focusing on the digitization of forecasting, preventing serious consequences, and managing processes in disasters and accidents, has come to a successful conclusion” was held today at the press club of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). Within the framework of the project, through the application of modern foresight tools, a strategic analytical report was prepared, interdisciplinary educational content was developed, and specific recommendations were formulated for the application and further development of the results in Europe and beyond with significant interest from relevant stakeholders. New fossil fills gap in human evolution: Oldest human ancestor appears to be from the Balkans

A new fossil femur, or thigh bone from Bulgaria could re-write the story of human origins. This is the conclusion of an international team of researchers from the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Bulgaria), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (Germany), and the University of Toronto (Canada). Bipedalism (walking on two legs) has long been considered a fundamental threshold in human evolution and one of our most formative attributes. Until now, researchers thought that the first humans were from Africa and that bipedalism evolved there between 6 and 7 million years ago. The Bulgarian LOFAR radio telescope will become operational in 2026

The Institute of Astronomy with NAO offers opportunities to participate in its construction through summer internships for students, doctoral students, and young scientists. By the end of 2026, Bulgaria will complete the construction of the first observatory in Southeast Europe for the world's largest low-frequency radio telescope – LOFAR (Low Frequency Array). This is a pan-European project involving 52 antenna stations in eight countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, France, Ireland, Latvia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. An expansion with additional stations in Italy and Bulgaria is underway this year. BAS becomes an honorary member of the revived Plato’s Academy

Moutafov A symposium for the inauguration of the International Community of Academies was held on February 9-10, 2026, in Athens, Greece. The community, called Κοινὸν τῶν Ἀκαδημιῶν in Greek, is also referred to as Koinon in English. The Koinon initiative carries on the legacy of the late philanthropist Panagiotis Aristofron who bequeathed his estate to the creation of an international organization dedicated to global cooperation among academies, distinguished scholars, artists, writers, and academic and cultural institutions.
