Nanoparticles created by our and foreign scientists will be applicable in the fight against cancer

Scientists from Bulgaria, Slovakia, Serbia and the Czech Republic are joining forces in the SeNaTa project - "Self-heating magnetic nanoconstructs for theranostic applications", coordinated by the Institute of Catalysis – BAS and headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Kolev. The aim is to develop innovative magnetic nanomaterials that can simultaneously diagnose and treat cancer. Magnetic nanoparticles have the unique property to heat up when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. Thus, they can induce a local temperature rise in tumour tissue of up to 42-46 °C, a process called magnetic hyperthermia, which leads to the destruction of cancer cells. Additionally, by binding to radioactive isotopes, the nanoparticles acquire a diagnostic function becoming theranostic agents (combining therapy and diagnostics). First results have already shown that cobalt-substituted [...]

Scientific breakthrough by Bulgarian scientists leads to change in the study of physical processes in thermonuclear fusion

Dr. Jernej Kovačič Scientists at the BAS Institute of Electronics have developed a device called the Retarding Field Analyzer which is used to conduct experiments to achieve controlled fusion. The device has been installed on a tokamak in France and has produced results that will, for the first time, cause changes in the modelling of physical processes. Assoc. Prof. Pavlina Ivanova, head of the team that has invented the Retarding Field Analyzer Unique research from the measurement of ion temperature in the WEST tokamak divertor was presented during the 24th edition of the International School of Vacuum, Electron and Ion Technologies. Dr. Jernej Kovačić from the University of Ljubljana announced the results of the work of the international team [...]

MUSICORUM VIA with a new season at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The first concert of the new season of the "MUSICORUM VIA. Two Academies - One Stage" initiative was held last night in the "Prof. Marin Drinov" Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov and the Rector of the National Music Academy, Prof. Sava Dimitrov, opened the autumn-winter season of the initiative. "MUSICORUM VIA has started this spring and is gradually finding its faithful audience. During the concerts, we enjoy the art of famous European composers, thus adding a special charm to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences," Prof. Moutafov said and added that the performances of the talented NMA graduates were a form of tribute to the great personalities who had led the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and [...]

International Conference “Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing”

8-10 September 2025 The 15th international conference RANLP-2025 (Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing) started in Varna on 8 September and would continue until 10 September. It is part of the RANLP series of scientific events, always held in Bulgaria in September in odd-numbered years, and is the most renowned event in computational linguistics in Eastern Europe. They are organized by Bulgarians - on the initiative of Prof. Ruslan Mitkov from the University of Lancaster, UK, who is the chairman of the Programme Committee. Since 2001, the Bulgarian co-organizer is the “Artificial Intelligence and Language Technology” Section of IICT-BAS, with Prof. Galia Angelova as the Chair of the Organizing Committee. RANLP events address central scientific challenges in information and communication technologies - automatic natural language [...]

3D models and virtual reality revive the most ancient urban centre in Europe Provadia-Solnitsata

A large-scale project related to the cultural and historical heritage of the archaeological complex Provadia-Solnitsata - one of the largest prehistoric sites in Bulgaria and the most ancient saltworks and urban center in Europe, has been launched on the initiative of the archaeological team led by Acad. Vassil Nikolov. The project is called "The Salt of Provadia: Innovative Approaches to the History of the Most Ancient Specialised Salt Production" and aims to "revive" the history of the most ancient urban centre on our continent which developed in the period around 4700-4350 BC before it perished due to drastic climatic changes. A modern movable dome - an interactive space that will "animate" the antiquity before the eyes of the modern visitor will be erected at the [...]

New exhibition presents objects from a Thracian burial

The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, opened "The Glitter of Hellenistic Gold. The Lord of Sakar" exhibition. The official ceremony was held on August 12 at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of BAS (NAIM-BAS). The exposition includes finds from a Thracian burial, discovered in the land of the village of Captain Petko Voyvoda, Topolovgrad municipality. "This exhibition is dedicated to one of the most dynamic and inspiring periods in the history of antiquity," Corr. Memb. Slavcheva said in her speech and added that Bulgarian lands were an important part of this world. "The golden treasures discovered in our lands testify to high craftsmanship, rich spiritual life and prosperous societies. We are grateful to Bulgarian archaeologists for their passion, scientific precision and [...]
