Best thesis developed at the Institute of Polymers

Assistant Professor Rumena Stancheva at the Institute of Polymers-BAS has won the “AQUACHIM” award of the Union of Chemists in Bulgaria for the “Best Thesis” defended in 2024 for the Master’s degree. Chemists and chemical engineers who graduated in the past academic year with the Bachelor's or Master's degree in various chemical specialties participated in the national competition. The topic of the awarded thesis is “Polypiperazine-Based Micelles of Mixed Composition for Gene Delivery”. Scientific supervisors are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emi Haladjova and Prof. Dr. Rayna Bryaskova, and consultant is Prof. Dr. Stanislav Rangelov. The study has been carried out at the Institute of Polymers - BAS in collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Biology - BAS. The results are published in the Polymers international scientific [...]

Nanoparticles created by our and foreign scientists will be applicable in the fight against cancer

Scientists from Bulgaria, Slovakia, Serbia and the Czech Republic are joining forces in the SeNaTa project - "Self-heating magnetic nanoconstructs for theranostic applications", coordinated by the Institute of Catalysis – BAS and headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Kolev. The aim is to develop innovative magnetic nanomaterials that can simultaneously diagnose and treat cancer. Magnetic nanoparticles have the unique property to heat up when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. Thus, they can induce a local temperature rise in tumour tissue of up to 42-46 °C, a process called magnetic hyperthermia, which leads to the destruction of cancer cells. Additionally, by binding to radioactive isotopes, the nanoparticles acquire a diagnostic function becoming theranostic agents (combining therapy and diagnostics). First results have already shown that cobalt-substituted [...]

Scientific breakthrough by Bulgarian scientists leads to change in the study of physical processes in thermonuclear fusion

Dr. Jernej Kovačič Scientists at the BAS Institute of Electronics have developed a device called the Retarding Field Analyzer which is used to conduct experiments to achieve controlled fusion. The device has been installed on a tokamak in France and has produced results that will, for the first time, cause changes in the modelling of physical processes. Assoc. Prof. Pavlina Ivanova, head of the team that has invented the Retarding Field Analyzer Unique research from the measurement of ion temperature in the WEST tokamak divertor was presented during the 24th edition of the International School of Vacuum, Electron and Ion Technologies. Dr. Jernej Kovačić from the University of Ljubljana announced the results of the work of the international team [...]

“Advances in Materials Sciences and Photonics” International Conference organized by IOMT

The Institute of Optical Materials and Technologies (IOMT) hosted the "Advances in Materials Sciences and Photonics" second international conference AMSP'25, funded by the Bulgarian National Science Fund. The conference, which took place from 15 to 18 July, brought together renowned specialists from Bulgaria, Taiwan, Italy, Greece and the UK in the field of materials and their applications in optoelectronics, sensorics and photonics. Students, PhD students, postdocs and young scientists participated in the event and presented their research work. Four young scientists were awarded with certificates and financial prizes for the best presentations in the form of oral and poster presentations.

“Polymers 2025” National Symposium with international participation

The 21st National Symposium "Polymers 2025" with international participation was held from 29 June to 2 July in Kazanlak. The forum was launched in 1967 and over the years, it had established itself as the most significant event in the field of polymer science in Bulgaria, providing an opportunity for the presentation of scientific results, exchange of ideas and development of collaborations between Bulgarian and foreign scientists. The "Polymers 2025" Symposium was organized by the Institute of Polymers at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The Forum was held with financial support from the Bulgarian National Science Fund (project КП-06-МНФ/48). At the invitation of the organizers, this year's edition was honored with [...]

Science and Technology Fair – curiosity is the engine of knowledge

The Institute of Solid State Physics - BAS and Science Me Up organized a science and technology fair on June 7 at the Scientific Complex 2 of BAS. The event attracted the attention of more than 1500 visitors - schoolchildren, parents, students, teachers, researchers and friends. They participated in lectures, lab visits and pupil hands-on workshops. The organizers of the event - Assoc. Prof. Ekaterina Iordanova, Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics at BAS, and Mr. Yavor Kiryakov, Manager of Science Me Up, congratulated the participants of the Science Fair. Researchers from the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Institute of Astronomy with the National Astronomical Observatory and the Central Laboratory for Solar Energy and New Energy Sources at BAS presented their work [...]
