At its meeting on 19 June, the Assembly of Academicians of BAS elected Prof. Alessandro Maria Bruni from Italy Foreign Member of the Academy. Professor Alessandro Maria Bruni was born on 9 September 1978 in Rome. He works in the fields of Byzantine and Slavic palaeography, codicology, textual studies, historical linguistics and hymnography as well as in the field of Kartvelology. He has specialised with some of the most eminent medievalists, such as Prof. Enrica Follieri in Rome and Prof. Boris Fonkich in Moscow. The short-term forecast in the Annual Report of ERI at BAS is for GDP to grow at a rate of around 2.5-3.5% per year, driven mainly by European investment and domestic consumption. Inflation in Bulgaria in the past 2024 slowed down to 2.2% which brought our country closer to meeting the Maastricht criteria for euro area membership. Acad. Vassil Nikolov, the Director of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of BAS Assoc. Prof. Hristo Popov, and Prof. Necmi Karul from Istanbul University received "Guardian of Heritage" awards during the "Diplomacy of Wonders" event, which took place on June 16 (at the Ramada Hotel).   A delegation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University visited the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on June 5. The university is among the most prestigious higher education institutions in China as well as among the top 100 universities in the world, specializing in the teaching and development of engineering and STEM. The Vice-President of BAS Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov presented the main directions of the Academy's activities and the current mechanisms for the implementation of bilateral cooperation. Academician Ivan Ilchev, Head of the “Heritage BG” Centre of Excellence, was on a working visit to China from 18 to 30 May at the invitation of Capital Normal University in Beijing and Beijing Foreign Studies University. Acad. Ilchev delivered a series of five lectures on the history of the Balkan peoples for students and PhD students and discussed the possibilities of deepening cooperation with the Center for the Study of Civilizations at Capital Normal University. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences presented a GOLDEN honorary plaquette to Krasimira Stoyanova, former interim Minister of Transport and Communications. The award was presented by the President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, for her significant contribution to the process of naming Sofia Airport after Vasil Levski. The ceremony which took place at the Academy today was attended by Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of BAS (President of the Academy - 2016-2024) and Corr. Memb. Atanas Semov.
