BAS awards Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, with a Medal of Distinction

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences awarded Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, with the “Medal of Distinction of the President of BAS” at a ceremony held at the Academy on November 12. The President of the Academy, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, presented the award “for his contribution and efforts to establish peace and justice and to build a culture of peace.” In the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa delivered a Lectio Magistralis on “Peace on earth, which all men of every era have most eagerly yearned for.” The President of BAS, Corr. The President of the European Research Council visits BAS

The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, met today at the Academy with Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council. The meeting was attended by Corr. Memb. Evdokia Pasheva, Vice-President of BAS, Prof. Zara Cherkezova-Zheleva, National Contact Point for ERC in Bulgaria, and Ms. Sabine Simmross. The President of BAS acquainted Prof. Leptin with the activities of the Centers of Competence and Excellence and emphasized that the modern infrastructure at the Academy supported the research of scientists. Prof. Leptin shared good practices from other Eastern European countries that could lead to increased participation of BAS units in ERC competitions. MUSICORUM VIA presents “Music in Black and White”

  Pianists from the Instrumental Faculty of the National Music Academy performed works by composers Franz Schubert, Ferenc Liszt, Robert Schumann, Pancho Vladigerov, Béla Bartók, Alexander Scriabin, Igor Stravinsky, and Guido Agosti. The piano concert took place on November 10 in the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of BAS as part of the initiative of the “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” National Music Academy and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, “MUSICORUM VIA. The “BAS presents:” initiative has begun

  Yana Petkova-Karakashova's exhibition "On the Road" is on display in the foyer of the Academy until November 21. The Governing Council of BAS awarded the Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Kiril Valchev with the distinction “For Correct and Rich Bulgarian Language in Journalism.” The President of the Academy, Corr. Strategic partnership in Plovdiv: science and institutions join efforts for crisis and disaster management

On November 4, 2025, a workshop was held at the Regional Administration - Plovdiv on the topic: "Space Technologies and Innovations in Support of Effective Crisis and Disaster Management". The event was organized by the Center for National Security and Defence Research (CNSDR) at the Academy, jointly with the Regional Administration - Plovdiv and the "Fire Safety and Civil Protection" General Directorate at the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Bulgaria.
