Prof. Maxim Kontsevich was elected a foreign member of BAS

On 8 October 2020, the Assembly of Academicians at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences elected Prof. Maxim Kontsevich, a Russian and French mathematician, born on 25.08.1964 in Khimki, Moscow Region, a foreign member of BAS. Maxim Kontsevich is a professor at the Institute of Advanced Research (IHES), Paris and a distinguished professor at the University of Miami. He is one of the leading mathematicians and theoretical physicists of the 20th and 21st centuries with outstanding contributions to algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and geometric aspects of mathematical physics, such as knot theory, quantization and mirror symmetry. IN MEMORIAM

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences announces with deep sorrow that on 11 October 2020, after a short illness, Academician Iliya Georgiev Pashev died. Acad. Iliya Pashev is an iconic figure in Bulgarian molecular biology. He is the third academician (after Acad. Rumen Tsanev and Acad. Asen Hadjiolov Jr.) in this relatively young science for Bulgaria. He was born on 12 July 1938 in an intellectual Bulgarian family. His father Georgi Pashev was a member of the Union of Bulgarian Writers and is the author of dozens of books and short stories on historical topics. After graduating from high school in Plovdiv, Acad. Pashev enrolled in medicine at the Plovdiv Higher Medical Institute, graduating with honors in 1962. Distinction of BAS for Petar Beron

Petar Beron was awarded with the Sign of Distinction of the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences at a ceremony held on 9 October 2020 in the Academy.
