Meeting of Prof. Revalski with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, met with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Bulgaria Khalid bin Kamal Faqih. The activities of the Academy in different scientific fields were presented. During the conversation the possibilities for establishing cooperation between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and scientific organisations from Saudi Arabia were discussed.

Bulgarian study proves the influence of gamma irradiation on the antioxidant activity of bee products

How gamma irradiation affects the antioxidant activity of bee products is investigated by Sen. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ralitsa Mladenova from the Institute of Catalysis of BAS. The research, funded by the Bulgarian National Science Fund, uses the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method. With this unique technology, paramagnetic particles (free radicals) can be selectively detected. In this way, food products and medicines that have undergone radiation treatment during sterilisation can be examined. Radiation treatment is used for the preservation and microbial decontamination of various food products, thus improving their safety and shelf life. Gamma irradiation with doses of up to 10 kGy has been shown to cause no changes in the nutritional quality of the product and no harm to the health of the consumers. EPR [...]

BAS and the Medical University of Plovdiv signed a cooperation agreement

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Plovdiv (MU) signed a framework agreement for cooperation. The event was part of the programme of the Academic Council of the University and was preceded by a tour and familiarization with the research infrastructure and staff capacity of MU-Plovdiv. The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, and the Vice-President, Corr. Mem. Evdokia Pasheva, visited MU-Plovdiv on 14 July where they got acquainted with the capabilities and achievements of the teams of the Department of Medical Biology, the Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics and the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology "Prof. Dr. Elisey Yanev". Diploma for Foreign Member of BAS was awarded to Prof. Maxim Kontsevich

The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences is gathering world-renowned mathematicians at a forum in Sofia The President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Full Member of the Academy, awarded a diploma for Foreign Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to the world-famous mathematician Maxim Kontsevich. The ceremony took place during the inaugural conference of the International Center for Mathematical Sciences at Grand Hotel Sofia. Maxim Kontsevich was elected a foreign member of the Academy in 2020. He is a professor at the Institute of Higher Education Studies (IHES), Paris and a distinguished professor at the University of Miami, one of the leading mathematicians and theoretical physicists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Innovations in Bulgarian speech synthesis and recognition

Innovations in the field of Bulgarian speech synthesis and recognition - a speaking programme, a medical dictaphone and an administrative "smart stenographer" were demonstrated by the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (IICT-BAS) at BAS. The three innovative developments are based on original machine speech processing technologies and are based on recent advances in deep machine self-learning. Prof. DSc. Stoyan Mihov gave a demonstration for the first time of how the products work. The speaking programme makes it possible to generate speech as natural as possible for people with visual problems.
