Scientist from IEFSEM-BAS with an honorary doctorate by Södertörn University in Stockholm

The University of Södertörn in Stockholm, Sweden, has conferred the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Prof. Dr. Elena Marushiakova. The title is awarded in connection with her contribution to the development of Romani studies and their inclusion as an academic discipline. Elena Marushiakova is an associate professor at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum of BAS and a professor at St. Andrews University in the UK, where she is currently working on a study of the civil emancipation of the Roma in the periods between the two world wars. Training seminar for small learning & research communities

The High School Students’ Institute of BAS organizes a training seminar for small learning & research communities (teams of a teacher and students) under a project funded by the Ministry of Education and Science. The seminar is being held on 5 and 6 February with the participation of more than 20 teachers and 40 students from 10 cities in the country with an interest in scientific research. During the two-day seminar, trainings are held to build scientific text creation skills, to develop communication and presentation skills and to apply research methods. The meeting provides an opportunity for teachers and students to share experiences and maintain contacts also in the future. European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel visited the QUASAR Center of Competence

A working meeting with the participation of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel was held by the scientists at the QUASAR Center of Competence "Quantum Communication, Intelligent Security Systems and Risk Management". Academician Chavdar Roumenin and Assoc. Prof. Lachezar Georgiev presented the research activity on the project. Mariya Gabriel got acquainted with the newly constructed laboratory complex equipped with the highest class of specialized equipment which is located at the Institute of Robotics of BAS. Among the highlights of the meeting were Bulgaria's participation in the European Euro QCI initiative and the related challenges. Prof. Hristo Balarev with the Order “St. Cyril and Methodius”- pendant

In memoriam

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with deep sadness announces that on 19 January 2020, after a short illness, Academician Blagovest Hristov Sendov passed away at the age of 87. Acad. Blagovest Sendov was a world-renowned Bulgarian mathematician, eminent statesman and public figure. Academician Sendov was born on 8 February 1932 in Asenovgrad. In 1956, he graduated in Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics of Sofia University "St. Kl. Ohridski ”; from 1960 to 1961 specialized in Moscow State University; in 1964 defended his PhD thesis and in 1967 became doctor of science. In 1968, he was elected professor of computational mathematics, in 1974 - corresponding member of BAS, and in 1981 - academician.
