Additional funds for the reintegration of Bulgarian scientists and PhD students are provided by the government

Additional funds for the National Scientific Program “Petar Beron. Science and Innovation with Europe” were voted by the Council of Ministers at today's meeting, announced at a briefing the Minister of Education and Science Krassimir Valchev. The briefing was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science Karina Angelieva, the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, full member of the Academy, and the Rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov. The Supreme Bar Council donated BGN 20 200 to the scientists from the Institute of Microbiology of BAS

A donation of BGN 20 200 received the “Stephan Angeloff” Institute of Microbiology of BAS from the members of the Supreme Bar Council. The funds are provided to support research in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic and the development of a vaccine against COVID-19. Scientists from the Institute of Microbiology are in the early stages of developing a prototype vaccine against COVID-19, therapeutic drugs for the treatment of coronavirus infection as well as participating in experiments to create a preparation based on plasma from people who recovered from coronavirus. Aluminum cored wire without analogue in the world is developed by the Institute of Electronics

A robotic complex for electric arc additive layer manufacturing has been put into operation at the Institute of Electronics of BAS. The technology is applied under the project “High strength nano reinforced aluminium powder cored wire for arc based ALM” within M-ERA network. The project envisages the development of an unparalleled new aluminum wire with a composite core consisting of aluminum powder with integrated carbon nano structures (AluNanoCore). The wire is designed for free flexible generation of lightweight components with high strength properties by the method of additive layer manufacturing (ALM). The influence of the concentration, size and shape of the carbon nanostructures (CNS - a mixture of nanofibers and nanotubes) in the wire on the properties of the arc deposited layers will be studied. A researcher from IEES-BAS is among the ten outstanding young persons in Bulgaria for 2020

Dr. Elitsa Petkucheva, Research Associate in the department "Hydrogen systems with polymer electrolyte" at the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES-BAS), is a finalist in the category "Science and/or technological development" of the program "The Outstanding Young Persons of Bulgaria 2020”, part of the international movement Junior Chamber International (JCI). A total of 64 young people were nominated in the ten categories of the program. Dr. Petkucheva has impressed the members of the jury, the organizers and the audience with her research activities aimed at developing new methods for the production of hydrogen, which is not only an environmentally friendly material but also a flexible energy carrier. BAALO has donated BGN 5 000 to BAS for the project “Science against COVID-19”

With a donation of BGN 5 000 to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Bulgarian Association of Agricultural Land Owners (BAALO, member of the Bulgarian Industrial Association) is supporting the project for scientific research "Science against COVID-19". It envisages to perform important scientific and applied tasks related to the diagnosis, treatment and development of vaccines against coronaviruses. Scientists from the Institute of Molecular Biology "Acad. Roumen Tsanev”, “Stephan Angeloff” Institute of Microbiology, the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering and the Institute of Experimental Morphology, Pathology and Anthropology with a museum are taking part in "Science against COVID-19" of BAS. Thematic competition for developments in the field of COVID-19

BGN 2 400 000 will be provided by the government for the Science Fund (BSF) which will be used for a thematic competition for developments in the field of COVID-19. This was announced at a briefing at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Karina Angelieva. There are new challenges in science and scientists from different countries cannot cope alone, so we must provide an opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams, to have access to published data and results, Deputy Minister Angelieva added.
