BAS receives a positive opinion on the naming of Sofia Airport

The Ministry of Transport and Communications supports the implementation of the project proposed by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for naming Sofia Airport after the brightest historical figure for Bulgaria, Vasil Levski. This has become clear during the meeting held by the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski, Member of the Academy, and the Minister of Transport and Communications Krasimira Stoyanova today at the Academy. Minister Stoyanova handed to Prof. Revalski the positive opinion of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and informed him about the necessary concrete actions for the naming of Sofia Airport. The Assembly of Academicians has elected Prof. Yuri Tschinkel from the USA foreign member of BAS

On 25 November, the Assembly of Academicians at BAS elected Prof. Prof. Yuri Tschinkel from the USA foreign member of BAS. Yuri Tschinkel is a professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York, USA. He is one of the leading contemporary mathematicians with outstanding contributions to the development of algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, and geometric aspects of mathematical physics. His main results have been published in over 130 papers in the most prestigious mathematical and physics journals and have been cited more than 1550 times. He is the editor of 19 mathematical books and 23 surveys. BAS economists: convergence in the EU generates faster economic growth in low-income countries

In the European Union, there is convergence which arises from faster economic growth in low-income countries. For Bulgaria this growth is not enough - it became clear at the opening of the jubilee scientific conference on "Economic Development and Policies: Realities and Prospects. European Integration, Convergence and Cohesion". Significant advances in language modelling by scientists from IICT-BAS

Georgi Shopov The PhD student Georgi Shopov from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IICT-BAS) took part in the world's leading conference in the field of natural language processing - "Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing" which was held from 12-16 November in Miami, USA. At the conference, Georgi Shopov presented new scientific results in the field of language modeling achieved at IICT-BAS and forming the main part of his dissertation. 1271 papers were selected for the main conference from 6105 submitted. Georgi Shopov's paper, co-authored with Associate Professor Stefan Gerdjikov from IICT-BAS and FMI of SU “St. Kliment Ohridski” were among the 168 awarded with an oral report. Caretaker Minister of Education and Science Prof. Galin Tsokov awards the President of BAS Prof. Julian Revalski with a Plaquette

At a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of BAS held on 20.11.2024, Minister Galin Tsokov honoured Prof. Julian Revalski with a Plaquette of the Ministry of Education and Science for his overall activity as the President of BAS in two consecutive terms and for the joint work between the two institutions. The plaquette has been made by Bulgarian students from the “Velizar Peev” Vocational High School in Svoge and depicts the Bulgarian alphabet. “Zlatno Pero” (Golden Plume) award for a BAS scientist

The Union of Bulgarian Journalists (UBJ) has awarded its highest prize - the Golden Plume Medal to Prof. DSc. Garo Mardirossian from the Space Research and Technology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). When presenting the award on November 18, the President of UBJ, Snezhana Todorova, stressed that apart from the scientific, inventive and pedagogical activities of Prof. Mardirossian, this high award was given to him for his almost 50 years of active work in the print and electronic media, in his more than 400 appearances in which he promoted science and introduced the public to the achievements of Bulgarian science, and in particular of BAS.
