International recognition for the Bulgarian school of electrochemistry: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Nikolov elected a member of the Alpha-Beta Society

Associate Professor Dr. Plamen Nikolov, Director of the “Academician Evgeni Budevski” Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES-BAS) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, has been elected as the 33rd member of the prestigious international scientific Alpha-Beta Society. The news was announced on 15 September during this year’s European Lead Battery Conference (ELBC’2026) in Vienna. Membership of the Alpha-Beta Society is strictly limited and is expanded by only one new member per year. Members of the society are internationally recognised scientists and specialists who have made an exceptional contribution to the development of science and technology relating to lead-acid batteries. Bulgarian scientists uncover the key to a rare genetic disorder

Rare diseases affect 1 in 2,000 people which means over 350,000–400,000 Bulgarians and at least 30 million Europeans. To date, 7,000–8,000 rare diseases have been identified, the majority of which are of unknown origin, and over 90 per cent of which have no treatment. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases is of paramount importance for medical science and human health. An international school on nuclear physics, neutron physics and applications held in Nessebar

From 13 to 18 September, the 24th International School on Nuclear Physics, Neutron Physics and Applications was held in Nessebar. The event was organised by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy – BAS, with the support of the Bulgarian National Science Fund, Kozloduy NPP EAD, “Kozloduy NPP – New Capacity” and the State Enterprise “Radioactive Waste”. “Current Issues in Science” hosts a lecture by Prof. Nikolai Spassov

  On 17 September, Prof. Nikolai Spassov from the National Museum of Natural History gave a lecture at BAS entitled “The first bipedal hominids originated in the Balkans, not in Africa”. The lecture took place as part of the academic seminar “Current Issues in Science”. Prof. Spassov is a zoologist, palaeontologist and palaeoanthropologist. He is the author of more than 280 scientific publications, many of which have appeared in leading international journals.
