Image and Text Award

On February 26, 2026, the Image and Text Award was presented for the first time. established by the Bulgarian-European Cultural Dialogues Centrе оoundation in recognition of the significant contribution of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruzha Marinska to Bulgarian art history and the study of Bulgarian art in the context of European cultural tradition. The award is given for original scientific works in the field of art studies published between January 1 and December 31, 2025, and aims to encourage and support the development of art studies in Bulgaria. The winner is Dr. Maria Miteva, associate professor at the Institute of Art Studies at BAS, head of the “New Bulgarian Art” research group. She was honored for her monograph Art and Commission. Academic lecture at BAS “Pius XII and the Jewish Question”

The President of BAS, Corr. Memb. Evelina Slavcheva, and the Vice-President Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov attended the academic lecture by Prof. Kiril Kartalov entitled “Pius XII and the Jewish Question.” The topic is completely innovative for specialized Bulgarian literature and to a large extent for world literature as well as it is based on Vatican archives access to which has only be permitted since 2020. Prof. Kartalov examines one of the most significant and controversial topics in papal diplomacy in his book, explaining the Holy See's position on the Jewish question during the Holocaust and attempting to interpret the so-called silence of Pius XII. European Heritage Label for Provadia-Solnitsata

The European Commission has awarded the prehistoric salt-producing and urban center of Provadia-Solnitsata with the European Heritage Label, a recognition given to sites of exceptional importance to European cultural identity and the safeguarding of common European cultural heritage. Receiving this label highlights the importance of the Provadia-Solnitsata archaeological complex not only at the national level, but also at the European level. It provides an opportunity for the site to join European networks and projects, exchange good practices, and present its cultural wealth to an international audience. The label motivates even more active preservation, research, and promotion of Solnitsata and confirms its place as a cultural bridge between the past and the present, inspiring and educating generations. Lecture on “Some Current Issues in the Penal Policy of the Republic of Bulgaria” delivered by Corr. Memb. Boris Velchev at BAS

In his lecture, delivered on February 19, 2026, as part of the “Current Issues in Science” Academic Seminar, Corr. Memb. Velchev presented specific issues related to the creation and implementation of penal policy in the Republic of Bulgaria. He emphasized certain trends in legislation, as well as who was responsible for the effectiveness of crime prevention. Special attention was paid to the role and place of the police and the prosecution in the implementation of state penal policy and the difference between the detection and investigation of crimes. The Bulgarian LOFAR radio telescope will become operational in 2026

The Institute of Astronomy with NAO offers opportunities to participate in its construction through summer internships for students, doctoral students, and young scientists. By the end of 2026, Bulgaria will complete the construction of the first observatory in Southeast Europe for the world's largest low-frequency radio telescope – LOFAR (Low Frequency Array). This is a pan-European project involving 52 antenna stations in eight countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, France, Ireland, Latvia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. An expansion with additional stations in Italy and Bulgaria is underway this year. Visit of the Minister of Energy to the Geological Institute of BAS

On February 13, Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov and Executive Director of Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) Valentin Nikolov visited the Geological Institute of BAS. The meeting was also attended by BAS Vice President Prof. Shtelian Shterionov. During the visit, they discussed Bulgaria's potential for exploring and extracting critical and strategic raw materials as well as energy resources, including through research under the current National Science Program “Critical and Strategic Raw Materials for Green Transition and Sustainable Development.” The main focus of the talks was the detailed study of critical raw materials in the Maritsa East coal basin which is being carried out under a recently concluded tripartite agreement between BEH, Maritsa East Mines EAD, and the Geological Institute of BAS.
