The study of the 4U 2206+54 star whose magnetic field is trillions of times stronger than that of the Sun was named the most significant scientific achievement of the Institute of Astronomy with NAO - BAS for 2025. The results of the study of key characteristics of this binary system were obtained through observations with a 2-meter telescope at NAO Rozhen and published in the authoritative “Astronomy & Astrophysics” journal. The research was carried out by an international team of astronomers led by Assoc. Prof. Kiril Stoyanov and included [...]

The 2026 lecture series of the “Current Issues in Science” academic seminar has begun

This year's edition of the academic seminar “Current Issues in Science” began with a lecture by Corr. Memb. Stefan Dragoev, DSc, on “Current Scientific Research and Innovations in Bulgarian Foods of Animal Origin.” The topic of the quality, safety, and functionality of foods of animal origin is not only topical but also key to the development of the Bulgarian food sector. In his lecture, held on January 22, 2026, as part of the “Current Issues in Science” academic seminar, Corr. Memb. Dragoev presented current scientific research and innovations in Bulgarian foods of animal origin conducted over the last decade. The lecture presented scientific research on inhibiting lipid peroxidation processes in sausages by optimizing the composition of mixtures of natural antioxidants and biologically active substances; [...]

BAS, BEH, and Maritsa East Mines sign a tripartite agreement for cooperation in the exploration of critical raw materials and rare earth metals

At an official ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rosen Zhelyazkov, and the Minister of Energy, Zhecho Stankov, on January 15 in Radnevo, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Geological Institute of BAS (GI-BAS), the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), and Maritsa East Mines EAD, represented by Prof. Svetoslav Georgiev, Mr. Valentin Nikolov, and Mr. Todor Todorov, respectively. Under the agreement, the GI-BAS team will conduct a comprehensive study and analysis of the content of critical and strategic raw materials (including rare earth elements) in the East Maritsa Coal Basin. The aim is to establish the potential of lignite coal in the basin for the extraction of critical and strategic raw materials which would ensure a long-term perspective for [...]

A doctoral student from the Institute of Microbiology of BAS wins the annual doctoral scholarship of the Karoll Knowledge Foundation

Lidiya Kechidzhieva, a doctoral student in immunology at the Institute of Microbiology of BAS, is the new recipient of the annual doctoral scholarship of the Karoll Knowledge Foundation. She won the jury's vote in competition with two doctoral students from Sofia University and one from South-West University. The topic of her doctoral thesis is “Investigation of the effect of a specific methyl-supplemented diet on the development of systemic lupus erythematosus in mouse models of the disease.” Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the most complex autoimmune diseases, characterized by impaired immune tolerance, chronic inflammation, and severe organ damage. Current therapies are limited due to their non-specificity and cytotoxicity which necessitates the search for new, more selective approaches. The project addresses this need by investigating [...]
