The international scientific conference "St. Kliment Ohridski in the culture of Europe" was held at BAS

1-1100 DSC_0095A three-day international conference on the topic "St. Kliment Ohridski in the culture of Europe" was opened on 25 November 2016 in the Great Hall of BAS. The conference is part of the celebration of 1100 years of the Assumption of St. Kliment Ohridski. Organizers of the event are the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

2-1100 DSC_0077The conference involved more than 80 scientists from 15 countries who will present reports in 10 thematic sections. Philologists, historians and art historians will present their latest research about the life, activity and the epoch of St. Kliment Ohridski. The official guests in the work of the scientific forum included representatives of Sofia Municipality, the National Commission for UNESCO, the Union of Bulgarian Journalists, the National Committee of Slavic Scholars in Bulgaria, academicians, corresponding members, public and cultural figures.

At the opening of the event the Chairman of the Scientific Committee Corr. Member Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva stressed that the conference will contribute to the exchange of scientific knowledge to preserve and develop the values which St. Kliment Ohridski and his followers have bequeathed us.

In his address to the participants the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov noted that St. Kliment is one of the most important figures in Bulgarian and Slavic history and today we pay tribute to his personality. Acad. Taki Fiti, President of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA) brought greetings and determined the deeds and the personality of the saint as a phenomenon of the era and his connection to all Slavic peoples. On behalf of His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch Neophyte a blessing was read by Bishop Tikhon Tiveriopolski.

The big anniversary is included in the cultural calendar of UNESCO in 2016 at the suggestion of BAS and supported by seven other scientific institutions from Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Serbia.

3-1100 DSC_0131On the same day in the lobby of BAS the exhibition "St. Kliment - the Enlightener" was opened, organized by the Cyril and Methodius Research Centre at BAS in cooperation with the Scientific Archives of BAS.
